PARADOX: something internal

Tänzerin: Cristiana Casadio, Foto: Klaas Wollstein

PARADOX: something internal is a project by stylist Luisa Brinker about the interplay between inner movement and outer form. The result is images of twisting, disorder, and letting go, in which dance, pose, clothing, and text together create meaning and tell a story. In collaboration with dancer and choreographer Cristiana Casadio and inspired by her piece nowhere, as well as by materials with stretch, shine, and transparency, clothing here becomes a formative force that reacts to movement and tells of resistance, vulnerability, and freedom in space.

Styling
As a stylist, I love creating characters - and I love their diversity.
Each one carries its own feeling, its own mood, its own message.
Often it starts with something that crosses my path:
a person, an image, a detail, a topic,
something that catches my attention and leaves a trace.
Sometimes it’s a thought that has been accumulating quietly in my mind for a while.
As a storyteller, this becomes my starting point - and my frame.
This is where I dive in, explore, extend.
There is always an essence:
a core, a tension, a feeling without words.
And from there, the process begins -
following it, testing it, experimenting,
until the form starts to reveal itself.

Dance
It is the same with dance.
There is the music -
giving you something you pick up, lean into,
allowing yourself to be guided by it, devoted to it,
before giving it back to the outside:
to the viewer, the perceiver.
But it can also start within the body:
from rhythm, breath, inner energy.
Something moves outward, becomes visible, becomes shared.
And yet, even then, it is often something that once came from the outside -
that gathered inside you, slowly.
It seems like it comes from within,
but it comes from the outside.
That’s the paradox.
Breathing in.
Breathing out.

Physicality
Then there is the material part - the physicality of it.
In movement, you work with inner force and energy,
but also with space, with gravity, with the energy of the environment.
Like a magnetic field.
You lift your arms,
but they are also held by the space around them.
You press into the ground
to lift yourself up.
It is the same with cloth.
No matter the weight of the fabric -
stiff or fluid, heavy or light -
it creates a sensation while wearing it,
and a presence that can be perceived from the outside.
Because fabric interacts with energy:
falling heavily,
or floating lightly through it.
Some forms even hold themselves -
like the structured shoulders of a tailored jacket.
