Mulan in Action
Chinese and queer-feminist utopias at the English Theatre
Who is Mulan? What does the legend say and above all: who could Mulan be today? With Soldier M.I.A., Singapore-born choreographer Ming Poon has created a retelling of the female soldier Hua Mulan, who, according to the classic legend, disguised herself as a man in order to join the army and go to war in place of her father. Four experts with diverse Chinese backgrounds — a dancer, a dramaturge, a sound artist and a costume artist — go in search of her. Using literary references, video footage of Chinese opera, and personal stories, they attempt to reconstruct the story of Mulan through a queer-feminist lens and bring forth a new Mulan-in-Action (M.I.A.).
