Memories in Motion
The Bundesjugendballett John Neumeier at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele
Die Unsichtbaren (The Invisible) is a dance collage dedicated to German expressive dance and the biographical upheavals of its performers in the 20th century. Combining dance, texts, songs, and live music, it creates a tableau of memories suspended between artistic awakening and violent interruption. Following in the footsteps of key exponents of expressive dance, the performance reveals how a vibrant movement was brought to a standstill after 1933 and how many artists were persecuted or eradicated from cultural memory. Embodied by the young ensemble of the Bundesjugendballett (The Federal Youth Ballet), the performance offers an approach to a repressed dance history and its invisible figures. The Berlin premiere marks the conclusion of the Academy of Arts' program Die Unsichtbaren – Aufbruch, Unterbrechung und Weitergabe im Tanz (The Invisible – New Beginnings, Disruptions, and Legacy in Dance).
