Ecstasy and Excess
A New Work by Constanza Macras / Dorky Park at Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz
Is pleasure possible—not despite of, but beyond hope? In the piece Good Bye Berlin, Constanza Macras will look back at the turbulent Berlin of the Weimar Republic—and directly into our present. Inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s semi-autobiographical novel Goodbye to Berlin and Kate Elswit’s research project Watching Weimar Dance, the choreographer, together with her international ensemble, will explore the legacy of iconic artists such as Anita Berber and Valeska Gert. Between dance, text, and music, it’s a vibrant collage of ecstasy, excess, and end-time vibes. Macras sketches a vision of Berlin as a space of friction: between intoxication and resignation, past and present. (jw)
