Cabaret of Identities
Olivia Hyunsin Kim/ddanddarakim Presents a New Production at the Sophiensæle
Following the success of Miss Yellow and Me, Olivia Hyunsin Kim/ddanddarakim continues her exploration of gender, projection, and Asian identity with Mr. Yellow. Drawing on the story of opera singer Shi Pei Pu, who lived for over 20 years as a woman in a relationship with the French diplomat Bernard Boursicot without Boursicot ever knowing Shi’s biological sex, Mr. Yellow challenges colonial and racist interpretations. In a cabaret-style performance, the FLINTA* collective blends opera, drag, and pop into a playful deconstruction of images of masculinity. Oscillating between historical references and the present—such as in its engagement with K-pop and K-dramas—the piece conjures up fluid, contradictory characters while simultaneously creating new, self-determined images of identity.
