Body Archive
Two Guest Performances by Samaa Wakim and Islam Elarabi at HAU
Two biographies intersect on this evening, transforming the body into a political archive: In Losing It, Palestinian choreographer Samaa Wakim explores how war and occupation are inscribed in the body and our perception. Movement, voice, and a live soundscape with field recordings from Palestine blur the boundaries between fear, fantasy, and memory to the point where the line between the inner and outer worlds becomes indistinct. Just One Tile by Islam Elarabi introduces us to the urban reality of Cairo: drawing on the rebellious musical style of mahraganat, Elarabi develops an autobiographical solo piece dealing with movement in confined spaces, control, protest, and self-empowerment. Both works use dance as a physical strategy to give visibility to trauma, resistance, and hope. (jw)
